Nebraska is one of the top ten teams on the AP Poll’s all-time list. It’s still list season, even with fall camp just a couple days away. Today the Associated Press released rankings taking into account the past 80 years, or since 1936, the year in which the AP poll started and is considered by most college football historians to be the first year of “the modern football era”.* The AP awarded a point for every appearance that a school had in a weekly ranking,...
Last week, an article in the Lincoln Journal-Star stated that, contrary to common opinion, Nebraska did not substitute on the offensive line during the 1995 Orange Bowl against Miami. The common thought was based on Nebraska’s frequent substitution on the offensive line in other games combined with the memories of seeing Miami’s Warren Sapp exhausted as Nebraska overcame a 17-9 fourth quarter deficit to defeat Miami 24-17. A review of the 1995 Orange Bowl (always a fun trip down nostalgia lane for Husker fans) showed...
Outgoing Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman sat down with Henry Cordes of the Omaha World-Herald last week and discussed his time in charge of the Lincoln campus, with Monday’s story focusing mainly on football. (Please, NO!) Perhaps the most interesting part of the interview concerned Steve Pederson’s lengthy and much-maligned coaching search that stretched for over a month that eventually resulted in the hiring of Bill Callahan. Perlman also revealed that when Pederson made the move, he already had lined up an NFL head coach for...
Ninety episodes in. What new things does the Cobcast crew have to talk about? Hint: It’s still toilet humor. Plus, Tyronn Lue, recruiting and Husker NFL hopefuls. We Nebraskans sure love the 90s. Which is why it gives me great pleasure to say that we have reached episode no. 90 in the history of the Big Red Cobcast. Yeah, 90. Who would have thought there would be 90 episodes of us questioning each others’ intelligence? Ninety episodes of genital and fart jokes? So what did...
Tom Osborne went on the Finding Mastery podcast with Dr. Michael Gervais, a psychologist who specializes in high performance. Osborne starts at the beginning… his father joining the war effort when he found out the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor. His father was gone five years, and Osborne is very open about the affect that had on his early life. Fact is, he’s open throughout the podcast as to what made him the coach and the man he is. If you get past the LEGENDARY...
The Cobcast gentlemen pick the greatest Husker defense of all time. Lets go back a few weeks. Lets go back to maybe 3 weeks ago. I’m not going to look up the exact date because I’m feeling lazy, and honestly, it’s irrelevant to what I’m about to bring up. 3 weeks ago(ish) we picked the greatest All Time Husker offense and in spite of my perfect, well crafted, geniusly designed team, Joe Canale won. Not only did Joe win but Pat came in second. NOT...
Today is the official celebration of 125 seasons of Cornhusker football. This week’s corny kickoff poetry takes a look at what the Huskers mean to Nebraska. Back in the day, 1890, we sawA team of red-clad footballersPlay their first game for Nebraska.Even then, there were hoots and hollers. First win was Omaha YMCAAnd just so that one was not aloneA perfect season was madeWhen the team did beat Doane If you did not know, Doane is in Crete#hiphophogwash and history meet Husker fans treasure historyThe...
No flakes today. The laptop is being examined by Apple, which means I don’t have my regular tool set for finding articles. Basically, without a laptop, my laptop, I am next to worthless. Mostly I’d like to cry in a fetal position on the floor, but necessity requires that I get up and go to work. I recently purchased a flat bed photo scanner, the intent being to dig out the thousands of negatives I have from the film days and start rifling through them...
In his third year as Nebraska’s head coach in 2025, Matt Rhule is known for a pattern of significant program improvement in year three. Nebraska, with a 5-7 record in year one and 7-6 in year two under Rhule, is aiming to build on that foundation and potentially experience a “year three jump.” Nebraska begins its season on August 28 against Cincinnati at Arrowhead Stadium. It will be an interesting offseason as the coaching staff works to fill in the player position gaps and adds depth...
