Today is the official celebration of 125 seasons of Cornhusker football. This week’s corny kickoff poetry takes a look at what the Huskers mean to Nebraska.
\nBack in the day, 1890, we sawA team of red-clad footballersPlay their first game for Nebraska.Even then, there were hoots and hollers.
\nFirst win was Omaha YMCAAnd just so that one was not aloneA perfect season was madeWhen the team did beat Doane
\nIf you did not know, Doane is in Crete#hiphophogwash and history meet
\nHusker fans treasure historyThe football seasons number 1-2-5Walk-on and scholarship equallyCultivate an intense pride
\nMany seasons have come and goneYoung men have grown into moreSeveral conferences Nebraska has wonIn all, made history and lore
\nPlayers here set the bar for an ageFor example, see Rimington, Dave
\nFIVE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPSAnd 3 Heismans have comeThis program is more than a blipAnd all who play are like our sons
\nPeople outside the Good LifePoint out the Huskers stand aloneThe whole state stops on a dimeAnd cheers the Red Storm
\nSome think we should ashamed beBecause nothing else does compete
\nLaugh they do, and say “flyover state!”Nothing else going on so Huskers aloneEntertain those with limited platesSaid in condescending tones
\nWhat they think is cause, ‘Tis really effectOther activities do not gain much startIt is a mistake if they expectTo pry the Big Red from Nebraska hearts
